Opening Day

It’s just a game, right? So why is it so endlessly fascinating? Maybe it’s the sense of teamwork or its unpredictability despite what the statistics say?

Yesterday kicked off the start of the regular major league baseball season and I’m psyched and ready to go for the next 160+ games! My San Francisco Giants got off to their usual bad start by losing to our rivals, the Dodgers, but then again we tend to lose Opening Day and make up for it by winning the World Series at the end of the season. I’m sure that statement just made me a truckload of friends and enemies simultaneously:)

So what other tidings of spring get you into the season? A favorite sport like baseball? Getting ready for the garden or perhaps something else?

  2. I'm happy for you .I know a lot of baseball fans. I've even got a nephew who's playing in a minor league in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  3. I am excited for another baseball season too, in spite of the fact that my Reds totally stunk in yesterday's game. Love this time of year. :)

  4. I like my Rockies when they're winning. I enjoy going to the stadium to watch a game once in awhile, too. But, uh, I don't think we'll be going to the World Series again soon. :(

  5. Well the Red Sox finally starting is definitely great, but the first smell of spring always reminds me of golf first and foremost.
    So happy it's spring again!

  6. I hate it when baseball starts so early, you need your mittens to go out and watch the game. We have seasons tickets to the Dayton Dragons (Single A of the Reds) and I love going - when it's warm.

Right now I'm still into hockey and rooting for the Pittsburgh Penguins. I hope they go all the way!

  7. I'll be honest, I didn't grow up in a home that followed sports, so it's always news to me when they start! But I do enjoy them now. For me, spring begins when the tulips start to come up. Love to watch them.

  8. I'm not a huge baseball fan, the game runs a little slow for me, but I do love spring. I can actually go outside to run again :)

  9. Some sun would be nice - I might then feel more inclined to 'Get into it!'

  12. I don't tend to do anything at the beginning of spring . . . except maybe dread summer. :P

  13. My tulips were coming up until a foot of snow got dumped on them--I'm still hoping they recover! And I've got tomatoes and zucchini started--nothing says summer like homegrown veggies!

  17. I think baseball is magic... at least when I think of old-time baseball. It's so... American... I love history and baseball is one thing that brings nostalgia! I loved watching my brother's games growing up and playing catch in the backyard. :-)

  18. I'm not into baseball, but I agree with Nick. Your passion is contagious. It makes me WANT to be into baseball. :-)

Spring starts for me when the calla lilies start blooming and my husband and I go pick out plants for our vegetable patch in our backyard. And then there's that certain feeling in the air that is just . . . Spring.

  20. We're crazy about baseball here in St. Louis. We were one of the victims of the Giants' run to the championship last year, but it's a new season.

  21. Oh that's right. The season has started, which means I won't hear much from one of my friends for a while. She loves the game and has some job related to it, which means she'll be super busy.

  22. Had my first game of the season watching my son play. Great weather made it fun! My brother-in-law is right there with you cheering on those Giants!
